Sony Dropped Kojima’s Physint — Here’s What Reportedly Went Wrong
Hideo Kojima’s Physint was supposed to be one of the PlayStation’s biggest upcoming games. Now, the ambitious action-espionage title has reportedly moved toward Xbox after Sony decided the investment was too risky. Check out the major reasons below.
Sony Walked Away From Kojima’s Physint — And Xbox May Have Stolen PlayStation’s Biggest Surprise
Hideo Kojima’s next major game, Physint, has reportedly suffered a sudden change behind the scenes. Once closely associated with PlayStation, the ambitious action-espionage title is now reportedly moving toward Xbox after Sony chose to end its partnership with Kojima Productions.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, three major factors influenced Sony’s decision: Physint’s rising development costs, concerns about its potential profitability, and the limited long-term value of a temporary PlayStation exclusivity deal.
Sources familiar with development reportedly claim that Physint missed several deadlines and was heading toward a much larger budget than originally expected. The problem was made worse by the game’s lengthy development timeline, with release still believed to be years away. For Sony, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to such a long-term project reportedly became increasingly difficult to justify.
The performance of Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding titles may have also affected Sony’s confidence. Despite receiving strong critical attention and developing a dedicated fanbase, the games reportedly failed to reach PlayStation’s internal revenue expectations. That apparently raised concerns about whether Physint could generate enough profit to justify its enormous production costs.
Then came the question of exclusivity.
Sony reportedly became less interested in making a massive investment if Physint would eventually appear on other platforms. Kojima’s previous projects have had relatively limited periods of PlayStation exclusivity, making the arrangement less valuable from Sony’s perspective.
Microsoft reportedly saw things differently. Xbox is said to have considered Physint a worthwhile investment, with the reported agreement also involving film and television rights for Physint and OD, Kojima Productions’ separate project being developed with Microsoft.
Sony has not publicly detailed the full reasons behind its decision. Kojima reportedly learned of the change in mid-June and spent the following three months searching for a new partner.
Importantly, Physint’s development reportedly never stopped.
For now, the project’s future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Kojima’s next big espionage game has taken a surprising path — and Xbox may have gained one of the most intriguing projects once associated with PlayStation.
